October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month ~
Drop by the Louden Nelson Center on Saturday, October 5th to say hello to our table at the second annual Transforming Together Conference, hosted by the City of Santa Cruz’s Commission for the Prevention of Violence Against Women (CPVAW). The food is free, the educational and inspirational speakers are free, and of course our own services are always free!
Day of Unity will kick off our week-long vigil on Monday, October 7th, with a table set up outside our organization that allows passersby to engage and participate in a craft project to share supportive messages to survivors. Those messages will be posted in our windows above a host of electric candles that will light up our beautiful home in memory of those who have died from domestic violence.
The Santa Cruz Public Library will be hosting installations of the Clothesline Project. The Clothesline Project was founded decades ago to commemorate how gendered labor tasks (such as laundry tasks) were often the only opportunity that women had to communicate with one another without abusive partners overhearing. Each color of shirt represents a different form of interpersonal violence: visit the Downtown or Live Oak branches to check it out!
